Scouting Report: QB Aaron Corp

In this scouting report, WeAreSC takes a look at Aaron Corp from Orange Lutheran HS, one of two quarterbacks recently committed to the Trojans. Next week we will take a look at the other commit, Samson Szakacsy from Camarillo.

Aaron Corp
6'4, 195 lbs.
Orange Lutheran, Villa Park (CA.)
TYPE OF PLAYER: SC did a great job securing verbal commitments from arguably two of the top four quarterbacks in California on consecutive days. After Jimmy Clausen’s commitment to the Fighting Irish, the Trojan coaching staff searched for yet another gun slinger capable of one day leading the Trojan arsenal. Aaron Corp is a very athletic quarterback, running the veer option at Orange Lutheran. Aaron Corp does not possess the arm strength that will continuously challenge a defense deep, but he is very heady and good at making throws on the run.

WHAT WE LIKE: Many people wonder how a quarterback that runs the veer option will one day fit into SC’s offensive scheme. But the fact that the option is designed to utilize the quarterback’s athletic ability is a major plus. Many dual-threat quarterbacks have trouble keeping their eyes down field, immediately searching for an escape route as soon as the play breaks down. But with Aaron Corp, that is not the case. The veer option creates designed plays in which Aaron Corp can utilize his athletic ability.

When watching film on Aaron Corp, it is obvious that he is very calm and collected while in the pocket. Not only does he make plays within the tackles, but he is also very effective when rolling out. Aaron Corp will bring an entirely new element to the Trojan offense, a quarterback with the ability to create something when the play breaks down.

Aaron Corp may not possess the quickest release out of any quarterback I have seen this year, but he consistently finds a way to get the job done and make big plays. In his junior season, Aaron Corp led his Orange Lutheran team to a 9-2 record, throwing for nearly 1,800 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for 650 yards and eight touchdowns. Aaron Corp saw his junior numbers earn him league MVP and second team all-state under-class honors.

WHAT HE NEEDS TO WORK ON: It is obvious that SC landed a good one in Aaron Corp, but there are a few things that he will have to work before arriving on campus. It seems as if Aaron Corp is lighter then his listed weight at 195 lbs., so he will have to add some size in order to take the day-to-day pounding at the college level.

While Aaron Corp is a very accurate passer, he will definitely need to improve his arm strength. By no means does he possess a weak arm, but he will need to be able to consistently throw the deep ball in order to succeed at the next level. Aaron Corp is very athletic, but he will need to learn when to tuck the ball and run. Often, quarterbacks with above average athleticism tend to rely heavily on their feet, so it will be interesting to see how Aaron Corp adjusts to the SC offense.

WHO HE REMINDS US OF: Aaron Corp reminds me a whole lot of last years first overall selection in the NFL Draft, Alex Smith. Both Aaron Corp and Smith are smooth athletes, and do a very good job of making plays on the run. Neither Smith nor Aaron Corp possess incredible arm strength, but they make up for it with their play making ability.

Aaron Corp SAYS: "I basically made the decision Sunday night. They had offered me on Friday and I just took a couple days to think about it and make sure it was the right decision for me. I just felt this is where I want to go.
