Orange Lutheran, Aaron Corp win 710 ESPN SoCal sports honors
L.gifOrange Lutheran scored big Thursday night at the 710 ESPN Southern California Sports Awards, winning two top awards. Quarterback Aaron Corp was named High School Male Athlete of the Year, and Lancer Football won the trophy for High School Team of the Year.
The Lancers, who went 14-1 to capture both the CIF Pac-5 division and CIF State Division II titles, defeated Oaks Christian Football (the Division III state champions) and Artesia Basketball (the 2006 Division III state champions) in online fan voting. Head Coach Jim Kunau accepted the award from San Diego Chargers runningback LaDainian Tomlinson at the ceremony at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim.
Aaron Corp, who committed to USC over the summer, passed for 2,750 yards and rushed for another 1,135 this season. In 710 ESPN's online voting, Aaron Corp defeated La Costa Canyon basketball/volleyball star Chase Budinger as well as Oaks Christian quarterback Jimmy Clausen, bound next year for Notre Dame.
Jimmy Clausen has been the darling of the national sports media since he chose the Fighting Irish over the Trojans as his college team, but Aaron Corp's leadership and outstanding performance throughout the 2006 football season netted him several top honors, including CalHiSports.com's Mr. Football award and, now, Southern California Male Athlete of the Year.
