2. VIRGINIA TECH: Top signees -- RB Darren Evans, CB Cris Hill, QB Tyrod Taylor, DL Justin Young. The buzz -- Taylor is linchpin of good group for Hokies.

3. NORTH CAROLINA: Top signees -- DT Marvin Austin, RB Ryan Houston, WR Dwight Jones, QB Mike Paulus. The buzz -- New Coach Butch Davis and staff did yeoman's work in a short time frame.

4. MIAMI: Top-signees -- DE Allen Bailey, CB Damien Berry, QB Robert Marve, ATH Doug Wiggins. The buzz -- New coaching staff looks to have re-energized Hurricanes' recruiting efforts.

9. BOSTON COLLEGE: Top signees -- DE Cory Eason, OL John Elliott, G Nick Schepis, LB Will Thompson. The buzz -- Coaching change hurt the Eagles' class, no question.

10. WAKE FOREST: Top signees -- DL Uriah Grant, ATH Skylar Jones, RB Brandon Pendergrass, OT Doug Weaver. The buzz -- Demon Deacons reel in their usual under-the-radar guys.

2. PITTSBURGH: Top signees -- QB Pat Bostick, G Chris Jacobson, RB Greg Williams, WR Maurice Williams. The buzz -- Another good class for Pitt. Now, as for coaching . . .

3. LOUISVILLE: Top signees -- RB Victor Anderson, RB Dale Martin, S C.J. Peake, CB Woodny Turenne*. The buzz -- Nice job with limited numbers, new staff. Turenne should start right away.

4. WEST VIRGINIA: Top signees -- RB Terence Kerns, S Derek Knight, CB Ellis Lankster*, QB Charlie Russell. The buzz -- Kerns, from outside of Baltimore, is only true running back in the class.

5. USF: LB/DE Claude Davis, RB Mike Ford, S Charlton Sinclair, QB Alton Voss. The buzz -- Ford has a chance to start right away for Bulls.

6. SYRACUSE: Top signees -- DB Ryan Gillum, RB Doug Hogue, RB Jamere Knox, LB Mike Mele. The buzz -- Orange likely will get some immediate skill-position help.

7. CONNECTICUT: Top signees -- G Gary Bardzak, LB/DE Greg Lloyd Jr., QB Tyler Lorenzen*, WR Kashif Moore. The buzz -- Lloyd, from East Ridge, is one of six linebackers signed by Huskies.

8. CINCINNATI: Top signees -- ATH Scott Johnson, WR Adrien Robinson, LB Ricardo Thompson, WR O.J. Woodard. The buzz -- Bearcats signed three quarterbacks as they prepare to change scheme.

2. MICHIGAN: Top signees -- QB Ryan Mallett, DE Ryan VanBergen, CB Michael Williams, CB Donovan Warren. The buzz -- Ryan Mallett, from Texas, is the heir apparent to Chad Henne.

3. ILLINOIS: Top signees -- WR Arrelious Benn, DT Josh Brent, DB Anthony Morris, DE Martez Wilson. The buzz -- Zook continues recruiting magic. Now he must show he can coach.

4. IOWA: Top signees -- S Jordan Bernstine, OL Bryan Bulaga, QB Marvin McNutt, LB Tyler Nielsen. The buzz -- Looking to shore up problem area, Hawkeyes signed six linebackers.

5. WISCONSIN: Top signees -- RB John Clay, S Quincy Landingham, OT Josh Oglesby, WR Nick Toon. The buzz -- Toon is son of former Jets star WR Al Toon, a Badgers alum.

8. MINNESOTA: Top signees -- OL Trey Davis, DL Anthony Jacobs, OL Ryan Orton, RB Andre Tate. The buzz -- New coaching staff did nice job in limited time.

9. PURDUE: Top signees -- DE Nickcaro Golding, RB Malcolm Harris, OT James Shepherd, QB Justin Siller. The buzz -- Boilermakers' unheralded group hails from 10 states.

10. NORTHWESTERN: Top signees -- DE Vincent Browne, G Niko Mafuli, LB Bryce McNaul, QB Don Persa. The buzz -- Wildcats got solid players at each position except running back.

11. INDIANA: Top signees -- RB Darius Johnson, LB Tyler Replogle, QB Teddy Schell, DE Eric Thomas. The buzz -- Class took a hit when stud S Jerimy Finch defected to Florida.

2. NEBRASKA: Top signees -- OT Jaivario Burkes, DE Jared Crick, LB Blake Lawrence, WR Niles Paul. The buzz -- Good class has high schoolers from nine states.

3. OKLAHOMA: Top signees -- ATH Austin Box, DB Desmond Jackson, QB Keith Nichol, LB Mike Reed*. The buzz -- Sooners' class isn't quites as deep as you'd expect.

3. OKLAHOMA STATE: Top signees -- WR Dez Bryant, DE Jared Glover, DE Richetti Jones, DB James Thomas. The buzz -- Cowboys put together another solid class.

5. MISSOURI: Top signees -- DE Michael Keck, DT Andy Maples*, ATH Gilbert Moye, RB Derrick Washington. The buzz -- Tigers look to have upgraded their speed quotient with this group.

6. TEXAS A AND M: Top signees -- ATH Billy Chavis, DE Von Miller, RB Bradley Stephens, LB Derrick Stephens. The buzz -- Aggies were beaten badly in-state by archrival Longhorns.

7. COLORADO: Top signees -- RB Patrick Gates*, OT Ryan Miller, WR Markques Simas, DB Anthony Wright. The buzz -- Good steppingstone to get Buffs back into Big 12 contention.

8. KANSAS STATE: Top signees -- ATH Lamark Brown, S Gary Chandler*, RB Jeremy Reed, CB Justin Woods. The buzz -- Wildcats brought in seven mostly unheralded offensive line recruits.

9. TEXAS TECH: Top signees -- ATH Jacob Amie, OT Lonnie Edwards, OL Jerrod Gooch, DE David Neill. The buzz -- Edwards heads a group of seven solid offensive linemen.

10. BAYLOR: Top signees -- G Courtney Green, LB Earl Patin, CB Larry Rosebud, QB John David Weed*. The buzz -- Bears brought in five linebackers, with Patin (from Louisiana) the standout.

11. KANSAS: Top signees -- RB Carmon Boyd-Anderson, ATH Steven Foster, DE Rich Johnson, ATH Ryan Murphy. The buzz -- Jayhawks went heavily for skill-position guys.

12. IOWA STATE: Top signees -- RB Jamicah Bass*, QB Phillip Bates, LB Fabian Brown, OL Kelechi Osemele. The buzz -- Bass (Lyman) heads class that includes 11 junior-college transfers.

CONFERENCE USA

1. SOUTHERN MISS: Top signees -- RB Antwain Easterling, ATH Jamar Shelton, DE Jamison Wadley. The buzz -- LB Korey Williams Easterling, who had legal issues, was No. 1 on Sentinel's list of state's top 100.

2. UCF: Top signees -- ATH Kamar Aiken, DB Alphonso Bryant, ATH A.J. Guyton, ATH Darnell Williams. The buzz -- Golden Knights upgraded their speed and athleticism with this group.

3. MARSHALL: Top signees -- CB Dequan Bembry, ATH Terrell Edwards, RB Darius Marshall, QB Chris Smith. The buzz -- Thundering Herd added some needed speed with this group.

4. EAST CAROLINA: Top signees -- QB Rodney Cox, OL Linval Joseph, RB Daronte McNeil, ATH Jonathan Williams. The buzz -- ECU followed up bowl appearance with solid class.

5. HOUSTON: Top signees -- OL Cory Bailey, CB Ricardo Bates, CB B.K. Johnson, ATH Chris Tate. The buzz -- Cougars loaded up on defensive backs, signing eight.

6. UTEP: Top signees -- DE Jason Boyce*, WR Russell Carr, LB Isaiah Carter, LB Brandon Thigpen. The buzz -- Two of Miners' best signees (Carr and Thigpen) are from California.

7. SMU: Top signees -- ATH De'Von Bailey, CB Derrius Bell, TE Patrick Fleming, LB Julian Herron. The buzz -- 21 of the Mustangs' 23 signees are Texans.

8. MEMPHIS: Top signees -- OL Michael Antonescu, WR Steven Black*, LB Terrence Thomas, QB Dallas Walker. The buzz -- More than a third of the 23-man class (nine) are junior-college transfers.

9. TULSA: Top signees -- WR Trae Johnson, RB Charles Opeseyitan, OL Aaron Ringle, S Tory Tyner. The buzz -- Nicely balanced class, position-wise, for a new coaching staff

10. RICE: Top signees -- RB Taylor Dupree, DB Chris Jones, LB Tanner Shuck, DT Brian Stacey. The buzz -- All but two of the Owls' 22 signees played high school ball in Texas.

11. UAB: Top signees -- OL Greg Calhoun, OL Terence Edge, QB Bryan Ellis, RB Darell Norman. The buzz -- 11 of the Blazers' 25 signees are linemen.

3. AKRON: Top signees -- WR Vincent Hill, ATH Da-Von Moore, ATH Gary Pride, OL Paul Simkovich. The buzz -- Zips bulked up, with 11 linemen in their 24 signees.

4. BOWLING GREEN: Top signees -- RB Willie Geter, RB Eric Ransom*, ATH Mark Wooldridge, LB Gary Wright. The buzz -- Falcons signed 20, and six are from Florida, including Geter and Wright.

5. TEMPLE: Top signees -- RB Marcellous Grigsby, CB Daryl Robinson, QB Chester Stewart, DT Chris Tremel. The buzz -- Best class in a while for Owls, who join MAC this season.

6. WESTERN MICHIGAN: Top signees -- OT Jon Jack, DT Jacoby Love, OL Anthony Parker, G Andrew Yuds. The buzz -- 10 Floridians and some good offensive linemen for the Broncos.

7. NORTHERN ILLINOIS: Top signees -- QB DeMarcus Grady, QB Chandler Harnish, DL Ron Newcomb, DT T.J. Pirkle. The buzz -- Three of the 19 signees are quarterbacks for the Huskies.

8. BALL STATE: Top signees -- S Sean Baker, RB Frank Edmonds, CB Derrick Henry, LB Pete Rolf. The buzz -- Cardinals signed 24 players, and they're from eight states.

9. OHIO U: Top signees -- CB Billy Gonzales, LB Noah Keller, DE Curtis Meyers, OT Marcus O'Hara. The buzz -- Nine linemen, including five on defense, are in a class of 22.

10. KENT STATE: Top signees -- OT Charles Laster, QB Giorgio Morgan, RB Dwan Thornton, LB Dorian Wood. The buzz -- Golden Flashes wanted linemen, and they signed eight total,

13. BUFFALO: Top signees -- LB Adekunle Akingba*, LB Fred Branch, S Josh Copeland, RB Obi Ezemma. The buzz -- Coach Turner Gill signed at least one player at every position but kicker.

1. BYU: Top signees -- RB J.J. Di Luigi, WR Ryan Kessman, QB Jason Munns, G Manaaki Vaitai. The buzz -- Cougars placed priority on offensive linemen, signing five.

2. TCU: Top signees -- DT Kelly Griffin, S Tejay Johnson, WR Jonathan Jones, WR Jeremy Kerley. The buzz -- Of the 23 signees, seven are defensive backs for Frogs' 4-2-5 set.

3. COLORADO STATE: Top signees -- LB Luke Diehl, S Zach Donaldson, DT Jake Gdowski, C Tyler McDermott. The buzz -- Rams signed six defensive backs. McDermott is from Palm Beach County.

4. UTAH: Top signees -- OL Louis Finner, LB Mo Neal, QB Griff Robles, CB Damilyn Tanner*. The buzz -- 16 of the 25 signees are defensive players.

5. SAN DIEGO: Top signees -- WR Vincent Brown, LB Miles Burris, QB Ryan Lindley, DB Aubrey Smith. The buzz -- Of the 20 signees, seven were offensive linemen, and six were defensive backs.

2. OREGON: Top signees -- ATH Malachi Lewis, LB Terrance Pritchett, DE Kenny Rowe, DT Myles Wade. The buzz -- Ducks hit recruiting trail with a vengeance this year.

3. CALIFORNIA: Top signees -- RB Jahvid Best, LB D.J. Holt, OL Matt Summers-Gavin, ATH Shane Vereen. The buzz -- Cal still looking for class that will help it break through and win league title.

4. UCLA: Top signees -- LB Akeem Ayers, RB Raymond Carter, QB Chris Forcier, DT Brian Price. The buzz -- A really nice -- albeit small -- class. But it pales in comparison to UCLA's.

5. OREGON STATE: Top signees -- QB Jake Gelahoska, RB Ryan McCants, S Lance Mitchell, CB David Ross. The buzz -- Beavers did well in-state, in Washington and in California.

6. WASHINGTON: Top signees -- ATH Anthony Boyles, OL Emeka Iweka, CB Vonzell McDowell, RB Curtis Shaw. The buzz -- Looking for a spark, Huskies signed five running backs, with Shaw the best.

7. ARIZONA: Top signees -- DE Levar Brown, RB Joseph Reese, LB Apaiata Tuihalamaka, DT Kaniela Tuipulotu. The buzz -- A nice defensive class for defense-minded Coach Mike Stoops.

8. ARIZONA STATE: Top signees -- G Po'u Palelei, QB Chasen Stangel, WR Kerry Taylor, DE Luis Vasquez*. The buzz -- New Coach Dennis Erickson signed five junior-college transfers, and four play defense.

9. WASHINGTON STATE: Top signees -- WR Jeshua Anderson, G Steven Ayers, RB Logwone Mitz, S Terry Mixon*. The buzz -- Mitz is son of former UF DT Alonzo Mitz, who played in early 1980s.

10. STANFORD: Top signees -- QB Kellen Kiilsgaard, OT Tyler Mabry, DL Matthew Misifilo, WR Sean Wiser. The buzz -- New Coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff brought in OK group.

SOUTHEASTERN

In order of ranking

1. FLORIDA: Top signees -- DT Torrey Davis, S/LB Lorenzo Edwards, RB Chris Rainey, G James Wilson. The buzz -- Second consecutive great class for Meyer and his staff.

2. TENNESSEE: Top signees -- CB Eric Berry, LB Chris Donald, ATH Gerald Jones, DE Ben Martin. The buzz -- Vols ramped up recruiting efforts, and it paid off big.

3. LSU: Top signees -- DT Joseph Barksdale, WR DeAngelo Benton, S Chad Jones, WR Terrance Toliver. The buzz -- As usual, Tigers cleaned-up in-state except for USC-bound Joe McKnight.

4. SOUTH CAROLINA: Top signees -- QB Stephen Garcia, DE Cliff Matthews, OL Quinton Richardson, DL Travis Robertson. The buzz -- On paper, this is best class in school history. It's one of nation's 10 or so best.

5. AUBURN: Top signees -- RB Enrique Davis, LB Eltoro Freeman, S Michael McNeil, OT Lee Ziemba. The buzz -- Fifth in SEC -- but probably a top 12 class nationally.

6. GEORGIA: Top signees -- LB Rennie Curran, RB Caleb King, G Trinton Sturdivant, WR Israel Troupe. The buzz -- For first time in like, forever, Georgia Tech has a better class.

7. MISSISSIPPI: Top signees -- CB Jamairey Atterberry, ATH Johnny Brown, WR A.J. Jackson*, LB Chris Strong. The buzz -- Ed Oregeron and his staff know how to recruit. Will it translate to victories?

8. ALABAMA: Top signees -- DE Luther Davis, WR Brandon Gibson, LB Rolando McClain, DT Kerry Murphy. The buzz -- Saban and his staff did more than creditable job in about a month on recruiting trail.
