Without the services of its leading rusher, Orange Lutheran had to rely even more on quarterback Aaron Corp in its Southern Section Pac-5 Division first-round playoff game Friday night against San Clemente.
Aaron Corp delivered in more ways than one.
The USC-bound senior threw for a career-high 313 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries in a 49-20 victory over the Tritons at Santa Ana Stadium.
Orange Lutheran never punted during the game and the Lancers were nine of nine on third-down conversions while Aaron Corp was in the game.
"The offensive line protected great and the receivers made big plays," said Aaron Corp, who came into the game with a 71% completion rate and connected on 18 of 24 passes against San Clemente. "They made plays they should make and it really helped me out."
The Lancers (10-1) played without junior Ricky Pemasa, who suffered a fracture in his leg last week against Bellflower St. John Bosco. Pemasa came into the week leading the team in rushing yardage and touchdowns, but fullback Tyson Seneca picked up some of the slack against San Clemente by rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown in 20 carries.
"Everyone stepped up, so it was a good all-around team effort," Corp said.
San Clemente scored on its first two possessions and Orange Lutheran scored on its first drive, but turned the ball over on its next two. The Tritons weren't able to capitalize, however, and the Lancers scored 28 unanswered points.
"We were a little shaky in the beginning, but we finished strong," said Orange Lutheran defensive end Michael Reardon, who had a sack, a pass deflection and numerous tackles before knocking San Clemente quarterback Brad Curtis from the game because of an apparent shoulder injury midway through the fourth quarter.
San Clemente running back Josh Ferrell, a 6-2, 235-pound senior, was the biggest weapon for the Tritons, totaling 174 yards on the ground and scoring two touchdowns, but he carried the ball only 11 times. He also caught five passes for 62 yards and another score.
"He's just a train," Reardon said of Ferrell.
