USC Clobbers Illinois 49-17 To Win Rose Bowl
The Rose Bowl has been called the "Granddaddy of All Bowl Games" but No. 6 Southern Cal proved it does not play like a bunch of old men as the Trojans demolished No. 13 Illinois 49-17 on Tuesday to win the prestigious bowl game.
USC racked up a stunning 633 total yards of offense and that along with its points total were Rose Bowl records.
John David Booty completed 25-of-37 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns in the win but the team's rushing corps was even more impressive.
USC (11-2) got 344 yards on the ground with Joe McKnight rushing for 125 yards and Stafon Johnson finishing with 104 yards.
The most interesting aspect to the Trojans' running game was their impressive yards per carry average of 8.0.
With a number like that, Illinois (9-4) barely had a chance to win and it did not help that its opponent scored the game's first three touchdowns.
USC took a 21-0 with 2:21 before halftime after Chauncey Washington scored his second touchdown of the game after he ran a short 3-yarder into the Illinois' end zone.
The Fighting Illini did show its nickname was an apt one as they scored 10 points to give the Rose Bowl audience a glimmer of hope that a competitive game was beginning.
However, USC scored the next 28 points with John David Booty throwing two touchdowns during the onslaught. Fred Davis and David Ausberry caught his scores in the second half while Joe McKnight and Hershel Dennis scored on rushing attempts.
Illinois' biggest downfall was its four turnovers, two of which were interceptions thrown by quarterback Juice Williams. The club did manage to rack up 445 yards of total offense, 301 of them through the air, but they just could not punch the football through the end zone with its numerous mistakes.
The only highlights for the Illini were Rashard Mendenhall's 79-yard run for a touchdown in the second quarter and freshman QB Eddie McGee's 56-yard touchdown toss in the fourth quarter.
Tuesday's victory was yet another in the recent run of bowl game wins for the Trojans. USC is 5-1 in the last six years in BCS bowl contests.
