USC's Stafon Johnson heading to the NFL?
Earlier this year, Southern California tailback Stafon Johnson's season was derailed because of a freak weightlifting accident that nearly cost him his life and ended his senior campaign with the Trojans.
Due to the timing and circumstances surrounding his injury, there was a chance that Johnson could have petitioned the NCAA for another year of eligibility at USC.
There is still a possibility that the Trojans' tailback may be back for another year; however, it is appearing more and more likely that Johnson will forgo the medical hardship and make himself available for the 2010 NFL Draft.
Per Steve Wyche of NFL.com:
“USC senior RB Stafon Johnson, who has missed most of this season following a freak weightlifting accident, will not apply for a medical hardship and will turn pro, according to his uncle. Kregg Anderson said Johnson has notified USC coach Pete Carroll of the decision.”
According to the report, Johnson's same uncle, Kregg Anderson, has indicated that the tailback wishes to get himself into shape and possibly earn a spot at the Senior Bowl.
The fact that Johnson is working his way back and will be able to hopefully resume his football career after such a horrendous injury is a testament to the young tailback's physical abilities.
If he were to go forward with his plan, the January 30th Senior Bowl, played in Mobile, Alabama, would be a perfect place for Johnson to reintroduce himself to the football world and circles within the National Football League.
It still remains to be seen what Johnson will ultimately choose to do, but it may be the last we've seen of No. 13 at the University of Southern California, at least on the football field.
